7 Ways to Reduce Stress Today

Chased by deadlines, public speaking, at the peak of traffic jams, tangled in financial problems, broken relationships, these are just a few of the many things that can stress your life.


I once wrote an article about dealing with stress with the title: 17 Tips for Overcoming Stress in Life and at Work. This article is to complete my article.

Before I speak further, I want to emphasize that stress can actually be positive. For example, when you sit in school/college and face a test/exam. Stress dealing with tests/exams will improve your ability. Also, for example, events such as marriage, having a baby, or having a new home - these things can actually change your life for the better.

Apart from the positive things above, stressful feelings can otherwise endanger your health, your emotional stability and your relationship with others. Stress signs and symptoms vary depending on each person, such as a headache, fatigue, muscle tension, depression, irritability, worry, loss of memory, lack of sense of humor, anxiety, overeating, smoking, drinking and even addiction drug.

So, what can you do to reduce stress in your life? Here are 7 steps that can help release stress:

1. Have realistic expectations


Many people put expectations/goals that are unrealistic for themselves and others. Actually, it's not wrong, because there is a wise word that says: "hang your dreams as high as the sky."
Putting high hopes/goals can improve your abilities, but if those hopes/goals can actually bring negative stress to you, you should reconsider your hopes/goals.

For example, suppose you are currently earning 5 million / month, you then set a target of buying a 500 million BMW car in 1 year. Hmm ... it's not wrong for you to set a target to buy a BMW car, only the time period needs to be made realistic, for example within 5 years. Assuming, you have worked very hard and become a general manager with 40 million / month income.
It should also be a consideration for those of you who put up hopes/goals for others (usually for your subordinates), that the ability of every human being to accept the burden and face the different pressures of each person. You need to be able to see the capabilities of your entire team and set reasonable targets that can be accepted by the entire team.

2. Active


Exercise can reduce stress, through the release of endorphins, the body's anti-depressant hormones, experts say. Sports activities such as jogging, swimming, and aerobics can remove excess energy which if left unchecked can be buried in the body. Something buried, whatever, is not very good.

3. Make preparations beforehand


Stress is often caused by certain situations where you are. Many people, for example, have a fear of public speaking. But I think all of us must be nervous and stressed when we first speak in public, no exception. One strategy that is effective enough to overcome this is that you make the best preparations, including visiting the location where you will talk to begin to familiarize yourself. Often people say, to get the 'feeling' first.
You can also do exercises in front of your family or friends. But I think in Indonesia, this rarely happens considering our culture which results in you being awkward talking in front of them.

4. Break between your jobs


Many of us work in environments that require speed and accuracy. You actually have the ability to be able to measure your own level of stress and energy. If you feel your head is very tired, do a break. After all, if forced too, your focus will definitely be disturbed. As a result, the quality of your work will decrease. If possible, go for a walk outside, such as to the park, for example, to clear your brain.

5. Reduce caffeine


Symptoms of stress such as anxiety are very closely related to the amount of caffeine in your body. Many people drink glasses of coffee in one day. Try to limit your coffee consumption to a maximum of 1 glass a day. Reducing caffeine helps you to sleep well and in the end, you will get more energy.

6. Get enough sleep


Many people don't get enough sleep every day. Seven to eight hours a day is the recommended amount, varying between each person. You will know when you get enough sleep, you will wake up refreshed every day (often we naturally wake up before the alarm sounds), so you will face a more energetic day.

7. Balanced between work and play


People who don't allow themselves to have fun will get a high level of stress. Don't feel guilty when you spoil yourself with exercise, relaxation, entertainment and doing your hobbies.
